The United States vetoed on Wednesday a resolution in the UN Security Council that called for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of aid.

The president of the international organization, Guyana’s representative Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, has reported that the vote did not succeed because the United States, a permanent member with veto power, has opposed it, even though the other 14 member states voted in favor.
The representatives of several countries at the United Nations, such as Norway and Slovenia, have lamented the use of the veto for a “humanitarian resolution” in the Strip, emphasizing that “famine and the withholding of aid” are contrary to International Law and cannot be justified “for any military objective.”
