With the upcoming release of “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning”, starring Tom Cruise, rumors about the end of an era are gaining strength.

It is speculated that the franchise could continue without its original star, and actor Glen Powell, who shared the screen with Cruise in "Top Gun: Maverick," is being mentioned as a possible successor.

This choice, according to insider Jeff Sneider, would be Cruise's own initiative, who considers Powell a suitable candidate to take on the responsibility of the action and espionage saga.

Rising star

Powell has managed to stand out in Hollywood thanks to his portrayal of Lieutenant "Hangman" in "Top Gun: Maverick". This role positioned him as a rising star in the industry, and since then he has been involved in other significant projects such as the romantic comedy "Anyone But You" and Richard Linklater's "Hitman".

Currently, Powell is filming a new version of "The Running Man" under the direction of Edgar Wright, which, however, would not interfere with a future participation in "Mission Impossible".

Although Cruise has hinted at his interest in finding a replacement, he has also clarified that he has no immediate plans to retire, taking inspiration from actors like Harrison Ford, who continue to play iconic characters at an advanced age.

Therefore, Cruise could continue in the role to some extent, depending on the success of "The Final Reckoning", scheduled for release on May 23, 2025. The box office performance of this installment will be crucial in determining if the franchise can be sustained long-term and remain profitable.

The expectation is whether the audience will accept Powell as the new protagonist of the saga. Although fans mention that Glen has talent and charisma, it will be a challenge to match Cruise's long and successful participation.

The industry and fans of “Mission Impossible” are paying attention to how the story will evolve and if Powell will be able to fill the shoes of such an iconic character.
